Licences & Permits

If you're bringing your own boat to the Wey, you'll need to register with the Environment Agency. Here's what you need to know.

Powered boats

All powered craft need an Environment Agency boat registration. This applies to motor boats, electric boats, and narrowboats. If you're hiring, the registration is included. If you're bringing your own boat, you'll need to register before launching--this can be done online through the Environment Agency website.

Kayaks, canoes, and paddleboards

Unpowered craft also need registration for the Wey Navigation. The cost is modest and registration lasts for a year. Again, if you're hiring equipment locally, this is handled by the hire company.

Short-term visitors

If you're visiting from another waterway, your existing registration may be accepted--check with the Environment Agency. Boats coming from the Thames can access the Wey at Weybridge.

Navigation rules

  • Speed limit is 4 knots (walking pace).
  • Keep to the right.
  • Give way to boats coming uphill through locks.
  • Be courteous at lock landings--don't hog the space.
