Pyrford

Lock-side charm

Pyrford Lock is one of the most photographed spots on the Wey. Narrowboats moored along the bank, a white-painted lock cottage, and the Anchor pub right beside the water. On summer weekends, it's a popular destination; midweek, you might have the place to yourself.

The surrounding area is quietly prosperous--large houses, golf courses, and well-maintained footpaths. The poet John Donne once lived here; his house still stands, though it's private. The Norman church of St Nicholas, with its medieval wall paintings, is worth the short walk uphill.

The stretch of navigation either side of Pyrford is particularly pleasant. Heading towards Newark, the river winds through open countryside with views of the ruined priory. The other way leads to Walsham Gates, a rare example of a turf-sided lock.

Getting Here

No direct public transport--Pyrford is best reached by car, bike, or on foot along the towpath. Parking is limited near the lock; the Anchor has a small car park for customers.
