Guildford
The heart of the River Wey
Surrey's county town straddles the Wey, with the river running through its heart. The steep High Street climbs away from the water, lined with historic buildings and the famous Guildhall clock. Down by the river, things are quieter--waterside pubs, green spaces, and the constant movement of boats.
Dapdune Wharf is the focal point for the navigation. Managed by the National Trust, it's where the Wey barges were built and maintained. Today you can explore the historic buildings, see the restored barge Reliance, and take boat trips along the river.
The town offers everything you'd expect--shops, restaurants, a theatre, a cathedral on the hill. But the river gives it something extra: a place to escape, to walk, to watch boats work through the locks.
Getting Here
Guildford station has fast trains to London Waterloo (35 minutes) and connections across the south. The river is a 10-minute walk from the station, downhill towards the town centre. Several car parks serve the centre; expect to pay.
